How to Start an Indie Band

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
This article needs to be converted to wikiHow format as specified by the Writer’s Guide. You can help by editing it now and then removing this notice. Notice added on 2007-11-09. This is a simple guide to starting your own Indie rock band. Note: If you don’t like listening to Indie music, you should probably steer clear of trying to form an Indie band.

Steps

  1. Learn how to play guitar well. This is very helpful. Any good Indie song can be written on acoustic guitar, transferred to a full-band composition and still sound good.
  2. If you don’t already, start listening to Indie Rock bands. Some good ones to start with are Jaguar Love, Phantom Planet, Mewithoutyou, Death Cab For Cutie, Pinback, Dashboard Confessional, and Radiohead.
  3. Write some songs. The music and lyrics should put people in the mood to relax, go on a long road trip, or go look for love.
  4. After you have some presentable songs written, look for a bassist, a drummer, a second guitarist (optional), and a piano player (optional).
  5. Play your songs for your band, and have them lay down some parts to them. You may want to direct them to do something different. Don’t be pushy about it, just suggest it.
  6. After you’re sure that your line-up is going to work out, come up with a name for your band.
  7. Practice… a LOT.
  8. Find local clubs or bars or coffee shops to play at. If you’re in high school, you may just want to wait until a talent show comes around.
  9. Find a recording studio and record a 3 or 4 song CD. Burn some copies and sell them at your gigs. You may even want to send them to some Indie record labels.
  10. HAVE FUN WITH IT. If you take anything too seriously, then it can become a drag. With Indie rock, it’s all about the music. Just remember that.

Tips

  • If your other band members want to write lyrics, let them. If their lyrics suck, then tell them that they need to improve their lyrical composition before their lyrics can be turned into songs.
  • Look the part. You should look artsy and laid-back. So should all of your band members. You can’t wear sagging jeans and a Tupac t-shirt with a do-rag and expect your band to be taken seriously.
  • Fashion advice: 1. Plaid is not your enemy. Don’t go overboard, but it’s okay to wear plaid shirts and shoes… occasionally, you can even get by with plaid pants. 2. Girl pants are okay for guys to wear, as long as they don’t cut off circulation to your crotch. Make sure they’re not too tight, or you may be labled as emo. 3. Thrift stores are awesome places to get some clothes. Keep in mind that you’re going for a poor-artsy-college-student look. 4. Wear shirts of your favorite Indie bands. 5. You can wear any shoes you want, but slip-on skate shoes or Chuck Taylors are recommended. It’s okay to write on your Chuck Taylors. I suggest one word on each shoe that makes a two-word message. For example: Love Life.
  • Try to keep your songs uplifting and happy. They don’t have to be upbeat, but they shouldn’t be depressing. It’s okay to write songs in a minor key, but make sure that they don’t make you want to commit suicide.
  • Someone in the band should drive an over-sized, 15 year-old van of some sort to be used as a tour bus. Road trips and traveling are all part of the Indie band experience.
  • The point of having an indie band is to sound independent. Try different sound options, change keys, tune down, incorporate some electronic sounds, use reverb etc. If you hear it on mainstream radio, it most likely isn’t “different”. Experiment with different sounds, whatever gives your band that distinct sound from everyone else. If people like it, they will remember your name and come to your shows.

Warnings

  • Indie artists don’t make as much money as bands on major labels. They make very little money, actually. It’s all about the brotherhood/sisterhood and the music and the shared experiences and the road trips and the torn road maps and having to spend the night in a town you’ve never heard of. These experiences make for great stories later on.
  • If you’re trying to get internationally famous, don’t start an Indie band, because it probably won’t happen.

Things You’ll Need

  • An acoustic or an electric guitar, or both.
  • A band.
  • A love of Indie music and road trips.
  • Instruments and sound equipment (You don’t really need a P.A. system. Amps and a mic or two are a must though).
  • An over-sized van.
